Development of the reactor electrodes

Based on results of preliminary laboratory investigations, a set of electrode grids have been developed and manufactured using 4 different alloys developed in the project.  The electrodes haven been subjected to functionality tests at TI using fresh seawater transported from the Oslo Fjord. Sea water was extracted at 60 m depth and with temperature of 8o C.  Before the tests, the seawater was filtered through a 10 ┬Ám filter to remove particles and then through a Carbon filter to remove organics.  After filtration, the water was filled in a 100L tank and heated to ambient temperature.

The test set up was equipped with 2 reactors mounted in series. Water can pass either through both reactors in series during flow through tests, or one of them when the water is recirculated.  During the trials tests were undertaken for investigating the performance of the reactors in relation toelimination of coliformscultivated in the laboratory,generation of chloratesand leakage of electrodes.  The functionality tests were conducted by varying values of key parameters including voltage, current, electrode distance and salinity. During the trials a pulse generator developed at TI was applied.

The test results are consistent with the preliminary laboratory investigations and show that the EcoSeaSafe technology can be applied for successful elimination of coliforms, while the production of oxidation products is generally very low. Based on analysis of electrode leakage it has been possible to select one alloy as electrode material and take forward for application in the pilot plant.
